Award Recognizes Bristol Construction for ‘Superior Safety’ Performance at Fort Bragg Barracks

Bristol Construction Services, LLC, (Bristol Construction) was recently presented with a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers safety award for its work on the Army Housing Committee (ARHOC) Barracks Renovation M4540 Project, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Savannah District, presented Bristol with the “Sustained Superior Safety Performance Award” (Medium Category) Tuesday, June 23, 2009, at the “Serious About Safety” quarterly luncheon on Pope Air Force Base.

Bristol Construction has a $5.2 million contract with the Savannah District for demolition and renovations at the three-story barracks and two Company Operations Facility (COF) wings of the ARHOC Barracks Building M-4540 at Fort Bragg.  Work began in late January 2009. At the time of the award, work was nearly 50 percent complete, with zero lost-time accidents.

Bristol Construction was nominated based on factors including project safety statistics, project complexity, hazards associated with the work, and the company’s safety program and policies.

Project challenges included the need for a revised, fast-tracked timeline to give the Army time to move troops to a different barracks, said Quality Control Manager and Project Manager Steve Dow. Bristol mitigated impact on the schedule by working in a different sequence than originally planned. Work hazards included abatement of asbestos, found in the glue that held down old floor tiles in the barracks.

The project remains on schedule for completion in February 2010.

The renovated three-story barracks will be approximately 25,000 square feet and consist of 58 two-in-one suites, each with a common kitchenette and bathroom.  The two, single-story COF wings are about 8,000 square feet each. Each renovated wing will feature four offices, a classroom, a training room, an arms vault, a storage area, a large training area, and a common day room.
