Bristol Awarded Anchorage Regional Landfill Cell Expansion Contract
Bristol has been awarded the Anchorage Regional Landfill Cell Expansion Contract to design a new, lined landfill cell. The contract was awarded by the Municipality of Anchorage on June 4, 2009.
The ARL Cell Expansion project is part of the ongoing operations and expansion at the landfill. The new cell is the seventh and latest in a series of the expansion at the award-winning landfill, which opened in 1987 and serves the Municipality of Anchorage, a community of more than 270,000.
The landfill is located at the intersection of the Glenn Highway and Hiland Road, near the community of Eagle River, Alaska.
Bristol started this project upon award. The project will consist of a new lined landfill cell, with a footprint of approximately 5.5 acres. Bristol plans to have the design ready to bid for construction by next year and anticipates construction completion by fall 2010.
“This is an important fast-track project for the municipality. The project ensures continued availability of landfill space in a controlled, highly managed environment,” says project manager Jim Vogel. “This is the latest stage in a regional landfill project designed to meet regulatory standards and ensure no contamination escapes into the environment.”
“For Bristol, this is an extremely important and high-profile public facilities project, which ensures a better quality of life [for the community]” added Jim Vogel. “The project will give Bristol the opportunity to use our extensive solid waste facility planning and design expertise.”
The Bristol project team has previously worked on lined, Class I Landfill projects for the MOA and other communities, including the City of Unalaska and King County, Washington, as well as Class II landfills in Dillingham, Nome, and Adak, and Class III landfill projects throughout Western Alaska.
