Bristol Environmental Remediation Services, LLC (Bristol) has received its first work assignment to remediate leaking underground storage tank (LUSTs) in South Dakota. The work, which will involve conducting a site assessment on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, comes under a contract awarded last year by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 8. The work assignment came in early 2009.
Bristol was awarded the approximately three-year, $1.2 million contract with the EPA to remediate LUSTs in Region 8, which includes 27 Tribal Nations.
Region 8 serves Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Wyoming, and 27 Tribal Nations. The newly awarded contract could include site assessments and characterizations, and possible recommended site closures for areas contaminated by LUSTS. In addition, project activities could include remote site work, underground storage tank removal and disposal, site investigation and characterization, quality assurance program development, education materials development, and design and implementation of remediation systems.
Under Bristol’s nationwide EPA contract, Bristol and the EPA have worked with Tribes at more than 250 sites on 24 Indian Reservations within the U.S. over the past seven years. Bristol is currently operating one remediation system, designing several others, and actively conducting site assessments and site characterizations at more than 50 sites. Similar work will be completed under the September 2008 Region 8 award. The purpose of both contracts is to ensure that LUSTs no longer pose a threat to human health or the environment.
The September 2008 award joins a similar, ongoing five-year nationwide, $15 million contract awarded to the company in October 2007. In that contract, the company is currently working in six other EPA regions throughout Indian Country.
