The National Safety Council has recognized the Bristol Alliance of Companies’ commitment to safe working practices with an Occupational Excellence Achievement Award. The award, presented this year to Bristol Industries, LLC, only goes to organizations with lost workday incident rates equal to or less than 50 percent of the Bureau of Labor Statistics rating.

Bristol not only met the requirements for qualification, but exceeded them generously, said Bristol Alliance Health and Safety Manager Clark Roberts. Bristol’s safety program performance statistics put the Bristol Alliance in the top five percent of all companies in the United States, he said.

“Bristol worked 375,000 hours with no OSHA lost-time injuries or illnesses for the entire year of 2008, and only one injury that resulted in restricted activity,” said Roberts. “This means our OSHA DART rate (cases involving injuries/illnesses resulting in Days Away from Work, Restriction or Transfer to another job assignment) was 0.53,” about one-sixth of the national average for similar companies.

The award actually recognizes the combined health and safety statistics of all of the Bristol Alliance companies, a group of Alaska Native‐owned engineering, construction and environmental services companies with offices in Alaska, Washington, Texas and North Carolina. The Bristol Alliance includes: Bristol Environmental & Engineering Services Corporation; Bristol Construction Services, LLC; Bristol Environmental Remediation Services, LLC; Bristol Fuel Systems Engineers & Constructors, LLC; and Bristol Design Build Services, LLC—as well as Bristol Industries, LLC, which provides the firms with administrative support, and is responsible for its Health and Safety program. All the companies are subsidiaries of Bristol Bay Native Corporation.

Potential business benefits of the recognition include lowered costs for liability insurance, and strong showings in competitive bid proposals evaluations by federal clients.

Bristol Industries President/CEO Joe Terrell says he is especially pleased to note that the award recognizes overall performance within all Bristol Alliance companies over the past year. “Everyone within Bristol is a part of this success,” he said.
